Dover Western Heights Open Day 2009

This was the second year of being invited to the open day and I would like to thank the Western Heights Preservation society for having enough faith in us to invite us yet again.  I can only think that our behavior last year wasn’t bad enough to get us excluded….chuckle.

A number of our regiment camped out over night on the land opposite the Grand Shaft.  The usual revelry ensued and fun was had by all that stayed.  At this point I must admit that I crept off home, a mere 3 miles away, to my nice warm comfy bed. Well one doesn’t want to be too much of a martyr now does one!

Having a break back at camp.                                             Cooling off in the shade of the awning.

The morning opened with the smell of cooking bacon over an open fire, and the lads cleaning their muskets in preparation of the firing displays and skirmishes yet to come. A site to behold. A man cleaning anything is a site to behold!

The open day began and the public turnout was quite something, which was great for the Preservation Society, whose main aim is to bring people’s attention to the very existence of the whole Dover Western Heights site and to restore it, as much as possible, to its past glory. It’s a magnificent place, and one we love to visit.

We chatted to the public about how we would have lived in the 19th century and the firing displays went splendidly, with the usual misfires from the not so reliable muskets. The skirmishes themselves were held inside the Drop Redoubt Fort. The noise of the firing ricocheted off the huge stone walls in an amazing and impressive crescendo, and the public loved it.

We can’t wait for next year and we hope to see you all there. To share with us this amazing event at an amazing venue.

Oh one more thing. Thank you Western Heights Preservation Society for putting on a raffle.  I won first prize!
