Dover Western Heights Open Weekend 2010
Well it was a mixture of blistering heat and torrential rain this year at the 2010 Open day at the Western Heights in Dover.
The unit had once again been invited by our friends The Dover Western Heights Preservation Society and also the 1st Foot Guards who attend the event to help raise funds for the old fort and we turned up in force.
Saturday was a fine and beautiful day which really made the colors' shine as they were marched up the hills. The public were as friendly as always and seemed to enjoy the small demonstrations we performed.
A lovely day was finished by
awe-inspiring fireworks show to celebrate 100yrs of Rolls Royce at Dover.
Unfortunately, this day was spoiled
a
little by a heavy storm which left one the tents collapsing
on
our heads leaving us looking like drowned rats at 3am in the morning and the
other tent at 5am– You really do have to be mad to do re-enacting!
Sunday had brightened up and the French had arrived! Marching in the heat, half of us injured from the day before, we valiantly charged the French troops over hill and fences. This was primarily because our muskets had decided they were ‘too hot’ to work and wanted the day off!
The event ended with a short service with our friends in the 1st to pay our respects to the men and women of Armed forces throughout history.
The Western Heights are, in my opinion at least, one of Dover’s best kept secrets and are more than worth a day out with the family. You will be able to find a link on our website should you wish to go see the fort for yourself.
Both the unit’s and my thanks go to hard working men and women at the Western Heights, our friends in the 1st, 71st and 95th, the French who so bravely fought us that day and especially to all the members the public who came to support the event!
SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR!
